STANDARD WINGED INFUSION SET

An infusion set the connection between your body and a reservoir of administered preparation intravenously. Infusion sets have several components, including a cannula or needle, a site or hub, adhesive dressing, tubing, and a connector to the reservoir. The cannula or needle is inserted under the skin using an introducer needle. The site anchors the cannula or needle with an adhesive dressing or tape. Flexible tubing connects the site with the reservoir. An infusion set is typically worn for 2-3 days, then is removed and discarded.

IV Cannula is a sterile tubular device that can be fitted with an injection port which is introduced into a peripheral vein for administering drugs by intravenous route, making an infusion or a blood transfusion.

What Size to use?

The decision regarding which size cannula will depend on the type of intravenous therapy required and the condition of the patient’s veins.
Younger people tend to have sturdier veins making cannulation easier, compared to elderly patients who have much smaller and fragile tortuous veins.
In an emergency situation, any form of cannula will suffice however we should try to use the best suited cannula for the needs of the individual patient.
